August’s best-selling electric car is a failed model

In August, French manufacturers are solid in terms of sales of electric cars. But Tesla is not far behind!

Renault Megane E-Tech

As we saw this morning, in Europe, Tesla has outrageously dominated the electric car market since the beginning of the year, even if the American manufacturer had a more difficult summer than other brands. Place now sales figures for the French market, compiled by AAA Data, dominated by Renault, Fiat and Dacia, a little different from what we had known last month.

Electric car sales in August

In first place, we find the Renault Megane E-Tech, followed very closely by the Fiat 500 and the Dacia Spring which takes third place. Peugeot remains in the race with its e-208, followed by the Renault Twingo E-Tech in 5th place. It is closely followed by the Tesla Model Y which outdistances the Peugeot e-2008. On the last three places, we find the Hyundai Kona Electric, the Renault Zoé and the Kia Niro EV.

Focus on the Megane E-Tech

Remember that the Renault Megane E-Tech is assembled in France and that its engine is now produced in France as well, without using rare earths. The battery is from LG and made in Poland. The French manufacturer plans to repatriate the production of battery cells to Douai from 2024.

Let’s take this opportunity to remind you that the Mégane E-Tech is also the subject of a remote recall via a software update, due toa failure during recharging which can lead to the breakage of the air conditioning system. A problem that Renault minimizes, because of the ” low probability of decommissioning“.

Where are the Tesla Model 3s?

If you are looking for Tesla’s Model 3, you have to go check out the 14th place in the ranking with 255 units. As a reminder, Teslas deliver erratically, based on boat arrivals from China and the United States. But the new Berlin factory, which currently only produces Model Y Performance, should be able to solve this problem in the coming months.

This is the reason why, in July, no Model Y was delivered throughout Europe for only 888 Model 3. The month of September should be more favorable for deliveries from the American manufacturer.

Cumulative figures since January

Let’s now look at the cumulative figures, between January and July 2022. The ranking is not totally different, but it is the Peugeot e-208 which leads the dance on the podium, followed by the Fiat 500 and the Dacia Spring. Tesla is in better shape here, with the Model 3 in 6th place and the Model Y in 8th position.

Compared to 2021, Tesla delivered 19% fewer cars over the same period. The arrival of the Tesla Model Y Propulsion in France, cheaper than the Model 3 Propulsion, should however reverse the trend in the months to come.

Electric is on the rise

According to AAA Data figures, electric cars are growing in France, with a market share of 13% in August, just behind diesel at 16% and gasoline at 38%. Plug-in hybrids are seeing their share decrease with only 7% of the market. Remember that these should no longer benefit from their tax advantages from 2025 in Europe.

The market share of electric cars over the year stands at 12.1% according to NGC Data, an increase of 31.6% compared to 2021.

The Tesla Model Y is a hit in Europe when it did not sell this summer, we explain why

The sales figures for European electric cars for the month of July 2022 have just fallen. The Tesla Model Y still leads the dance, but it is strongly heckled by its competitors, French and…
