Out of boredom, Aiden Higgie (14) from Sydney tried the sugar cookie game from the Netflix series “Squid Game”. But the teenager made a fatal mistake and he had to be taken to the hospital with severe burns on his hands and legs, as reported by the Daily Mail.
The Sugar Biscuit Challenge is all about making a thin sheet of sugar, punching a shape in it and scraping it out with a needle. This task is also given to the game participants in the series. The difficulty: the shape must not break when it is removed.
Plastic cups exploded in the microwave
Higgie found a suitable recipe on Tiktok and mixed water, baking powder and sugar in a plastic cup. He put it in the microwave – and then it happened: the plastic cup exploded and the hot sugar hit the teenager’s hands and legs.
As it turned out, the mug wasn’t microwave safe. Higgie’s mother told the Daily Telegraph: “The sugar has melted into the plastic and the hot, sticky mixture ran down Aiden from knee to shin.”
Burns and nerve damage to the leg
The teenager suffered first-degree burns on his hand and deep burns and nerve damage to one leg. Doctors initially feared that he would need a skin graft. But Higgie was lucky in misfortune. The burns heal on their own.
Unfortunately, the accident is not an isolated incident: in Australia four other children with injuries had to be hospitalized because they tried to bake the sugar biscuit. The so-called Dalgona biscuits have been eaten in South Korea for decades and have become a global trend thanks to “Squid Game”. (gin)
