(dpa)/lip. Australian police found crystal meth worth around 1.1 billion francs in several shipping containers. It is the largest amount of the drug seized in the country to date.
More than a ton of methylamphetamine was hidden in marble slabs, New South Wales police said in a statement on Friday. A week ago, the authorities came across 750 kilograms of the substance, known as “ice” because of the white, glassy crystals. In all, police found more than 1.8 tonnes of crystal meth in containers from ships calling at Sydney Harbor in recent weeks.
Three men arrested
“These numbers are staggering,” said John Watson of the police department at a press conference. All shipments originated from the Middle East region, with shipment details being identical for both finds. The police are assuming an internationally networked drug syndicate, it said. She arrested three men in connection with last week’s find. Among other things, they are accused of importing a commercial quantity of the drug. Investigations are ongoing and further arrests cannot be ruled out.
Methylamphetamine, made famous by the successful series “Breaking Bad”, among other things, is considered one of the strongest variants of the amphetamine drug. A high potential for dependency is attributed to the intoxicant.
