Australian Ashleigh Barty wins Wimbledon tournament

The Australian Ashleigh Barty, world number 1, won the Wimbledon tournament on Saturday July 10, beating the Czech Karolina Pliskova (13e) 6-3, 6-7 (4/7), 6-3.

Crouching in tears in front of her clan, she seemed not to come back, before climbing the platform to throw herself in the arms of her relatives. At 25, she won her second Grand Slam title after Roland-Garros, in 2019, which allowed her to settle at the top of the WTA ranking and not to move since.

She is the first Australian to win Wimbledon since 1980 and the fourth player to win the junior main draw double at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club. Fifty years ago Evonne Goolagong Cawley won Wimbledon. As a tribute to her compatriot, Barty played with an outfit very inspired by the dress she wore in 1971.
