The Ukrainian qualifier Dajana Jastremska is sensationally in the Australian Open quarter-finals. For her compatriot Jelina Svitolina, the round of 16 is the end.

The round of 16 of the upper half of the table

  • Dajana Jastremska (UKR/WTA 93) s. Victoria Azarenka (BLR/WTA 22) 7:6 (8:6), 6:4
  • Linda Noskova (CZE/WTA 50) s. Jelina Svitolina (UKR/WTA 23) 3:0 wo
  • Anna Kalinskaya (RUS/WTA 75) s. Jasmine Paolini (ITA/WTA 31) 6:4, 6:2
  • Qinwen Zheng (CHN/WTA 15) s. Océane Dodin (FRA/WTA 95) 6:0, 6:3

For Victoria Azarenka, a third Australian Open title after 2012 and 2013 remains a dream for the time being. The 34-year-old Belarusian failed in the round of 16 in two sets against the sensational Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska, who celebrated their 7th victory including qualification in Melbourne. The 23-year-old Jastremska demonstrated her fighting heart in both sets: In the first round, she fended off two set points when her opponent served and overturned a 1:3 deficit in the tiebreak. In the second set she was unimpressed by a 0:3 handicap and won 5 games in a row. As is usual with Ukrainian players when they play against Russians or Belarusians, Jastremska decided not to shake hands after the game.

Jastremska will meet in the quarterfinals Linda Noskova. The 19-year-old Czech benefited from the fact that her opponent Jelina Switolina had to give up after just 23 minutes when the score was 3-0 from Noskova’s perspective. The Ukrainian, in the 3rd round Viktorija Golubic, who had been eliminated, had recently had to have his back treated. As she left the court, the 29-year-old couldn’t hold back her tears.

The Russian is also in the last eight Anna Kalinskaya. The world number 75 needed 77 minutes to defeat the much better ranked Jasmine Paolini 6:4, 6:2. The 25-year-old continued her impressive run this year. Previously, she always had to pack her bags after the first round of the Australian Open.

In an extremely one-sided round of 16 secured themselves Qinwen Zheng advance and, as world number 15, is the best remaining player in the upper half of the table. The Chinese put Océane Dodin (FRA/WTA 95) in her place with 6:0, 6:3. In the showdown between Zheng and Kalinskaya, a first-time Melbourne semi-finalist will now be determined.
