An Austrian soldier was killed and another injured in an exchange of fire early Friday, January 6 at a barracks near Vienna, the army said.
“A guard was killed and another soldier injured in a shooting shortly before 07:00 (0600 GMT) this morning in the barracks of Wiener Neustadtsouth of Vienna, tweeted an army spokesman, Michael Bauer. The police are investigating the incident.
A fight had broken out
Quoted by the Austrian press agency APA, Michel Bauer explained that the two men had argued before the shootings. The guard fired in the air before being killed. According to APA, it remains to be clarified whether the soldier’s injuries are related to the shooting.
This type of incident in the army is rare in Austria. In 2019, an Austrian soldier – a 31-year-old dog handler – died when two military dogs attacked him, also at the barracks in Wiener Neustadt.
