From the end of March 2024, Romania and Bulgaria can at least partially join the Schengen area.
The Schengen area is intended to ensure unrestricted movement of people in Europe – without fundamental border controls.
27 countries currently belong to the Schengen area, including Switzerland.
The EU member states have agreed that from the end of March 2024 both Bulgaria and Romania can join the Schengen area – at least partially. According to the Spanish Council Presidency’s announcement on Platform X, personal controls at the air and sea borders should first be lifted. However, it has not yet been decided when the controls at the land borders will begin.
Austria in particular has so far resisted accepting the two countries – out of fear of an increase in unregistered migrants. Romania and Bulgaria had been waiting for the decision since 2011.
The Schengen area is intended to ensure unrestricted movement of people in Europe – without fundamental border controls. It currently includes 27 countries, including Switzerland. New member states can only be admitted unanimously.
