She worked for the Greens in the Bavarian State Parliament for six years, but had to resign due to health reasons and has been a member of the V-party (party for change, vegetarians and vegans) since late 2016. From 1970, Rütting also worked as an author. She has written numerous guides and cookbooks and is considered a pioneer for the spread of vegetarian nutrition in Germany.
