With her books she put her finger in the wound and campaigned for the rights of women and homosexuals. The Italian writer has died at the age of 51 after suffering from cancer.

In her first book «Il mondo deve sapere» («The world should know», 2006) Michela Murgia describes her experiences in a call center. Central themes: The economic exploitation and psychological manipulation to which temporary workers are subjected.

Difficult themes run through her journalistic work. Murgia also writes about euthanasia, adoption and fascist rhetoric. She also published comments on women’s and homosexual rights in several newspapers.

Scold Meloni government

In early May 2023, Murgia announced that she had terminal kidney cancer. But she hopes not to die under right-wing populist Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Ultimately, this wish did not come true.

Her latest book “Tre ciotole” (“Three bowls”), in which she tells about her experience with the tumor, was praised by critics and has been on the Italian bestseller list for weeks.
