Founded by Larry Page, Wisk Aero has received a $450 million cash injection from Boeing. An autonomous e-high-flyer will soon receive approval from the authorities.
- The company Wisk Aero, founded by Google co-founder Larry Page, wants to get the eVTOL Cora ready for approval.
- The electrically powered, vertical take-off and landing aircraft will transport passengers autonomously.
- With Boeing, a major investor is now getting involved in the project.
Anyone who believed that electric flight taxis that can take off and land vertically (eVTOL) were a distant dream of the future or a gimmick should reconsider now at the latest. With Boeing, one of the largest aviation companies in the world is joining the Larry Page company Wisk Aero – and is paying a lot for it. Boeing should not only be a financier, but also a strategic partner.
The aim of both companies is the rapid further development of the eVTOL called Cora, the sixth generation of which is already well advanced. Among other things, Wisk Aero plans to maintain an air taxi fleet with 30 electric planes. The prerequisite for this is approval by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the federal aviation authority in the USA. Thanks to the strategic partnership with Boeing, this approval hurdle could now be easier to overcome.
According to a company press release, the financial support from Boeing will make Wisk Aero one of the best financially positioned providers in this segment. At the same time, Boeing underscores the importance of this future market. The sixth generation of the Cora-eVTOL is set to become one of the first approved, autonomous air taxis. And that shouldn’t take much longer. It flies at speeds of up to 160 km/h and travels a maximum of 40 kilometers on one battery charge.
Some ambitious and curious eVTOL projects have emerged recently. Noteworthy, for example, we find Macrobat, a kind of mixture of bird and airplane. ZEVA, on the other hand, wants to put people in a kind of saucer and make them superman with a speed of 260 km/h.
