- Two rear-end collisions and a breakdown vehicle led to a long traffic jam in front of the Gotthard south portal in Airolo (TI) on Sunday.
- Northbound traffic was temporarily backed up over a length of eleven kilometers.

There were also several kilometers of traffic jams in the opposite direction in front of the north portal in Göschenen (UR).
The accidents in front of the Gotthard south portal happened shortly before noon, as Chico Koch from the Viasuisse traffic information service said at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency.
As a result, the Gotthard tunnel had to be closed for a good hour. Koch expected that the traffic jam would continue to increase. This is because the tunnel had to be closed again shortly after it was reopened due to a breakdown vehicle.
From 4 p.m. the situation began to calm down a bit. About an hour later, the VCS reported a traffic jam of four kilometers and a waiting time of about 40 minutes.

The return traffic from the holidays also played a role in the formation of traffic jams: Before the accidents, Viasuisse reported four kilometers of traffic jams to the north and two kilometers of traffic jams in the direction of Ticino.
