2024 - Avatar 2: release date, cast, story, images... all about James Cameron's film

Released in December 2009, the first film Avatar was a bona fide phenomenon, grossing over $2.8 billion worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing movie ever. Director James Cameron (titanic, terminator) couldn’t stop there, and decided to expand the film universe and the world of Pandora with four sequels already announced.

What is the story ofAvatar 2 ?

2154, we follow the story of former marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), who arrives on the planet Pandora to participate in a revolutionary scientific program. Disabled on Earth, Sully finds himself transferred into the skin of a Na’vi, an inhabitant of the planet.

He will fall in love with Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), a Na’vi warrior, and will join the struggle of this people against the land invader who has come to exploit the resources of Pandora. In the end, the men are defeated, Jake Sully abandons his human body and definitively transfers his spirit into the body of his Na’vi avatar.

This sequel, with a still mysterious story, still had the right to a synopsis: “Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of the Water begins by telling the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and their children), the problems that haunt them, and what they must do to stay safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they suffer”.

Who is in charge of the film?

Unsurprisingly, director James Cameron (titanic, terminator, Terminator 2, Abyss) is back behind the camera, but also serves as screenwriter and producer of the film. Josh Friedman (the series Snowpiercer and Foundation) is a co-writer.

Cameron’s longtime partner, John Landau (titanic, Alita) is also present in production. The film’s photography is signed by Russell Carpenter (titanic, True Lies), and the music composed by Simon Franglen (The Magnificent Seven).

The company Weta FX, responsible for the special effects of the Lord of the Ringsfrom the trilogy The Planet of the Apes and the first Avatar, returns for the many sequels to the saga. A guarantee of quality.

What release date?

Avatar: The Waterway has been in the works for (a very) long time, and the release of the film has been postponed several times. As early as 2014, James Cameron had written the outline of the four sequels toAvatarand had to adapt them according to technological developments.

The shooting of this Avatar 2 started in 2017, and ended in September 2020. Avatar: The Waterway will be released in French theaters on December 14, 2022. The duration of the film is 3 hours and 10 minutes.

The suites of the franchise are already dated: Avatar 3 is scheduled for December 18, 2024, Avatar 4 for December 16, 2026 and Avatar 5 for December 20, 2028.

What casting for Avatar 2 ?

Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, main actors from the first film, are back. Among the newcomers, we can note the presence of Michelle Yeoh (Tiger and Dragon) and Kate Winslet (titanic).

More surprisingly, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver, who died at the end of the first film, are back.
