In theaters since Wednesday, December 14, Avatar: The Way of the Water, the long-awaited second installment of the franchise started by James Cameron in 2009, introduces us to many new characters.

In addition to their three biological children, Jake and Neytiri also adopted a daughter – the young Kiri, inexplicably born from the avatar of Grace Augustine – and a boy named Spider, the first human baby born on Pandora, who soon deserted the bunkers. from the RDA to roam the lush jungles of the Na’vi planet.

Very quickly, in the first part of the feature film, we learn that his real first name is not Spider, but Miles, and that his biological father is none other than Colonel Miles Quaritch, the main antagonist of the first part.

Killed by Neytiri at the end of the film, the latter also returns in the form of a recombinant – that is to say an avatar with his memories and his personality – and quickly gets to know his “son”. , Spider.

If the identity of the boy’s father is therefore fairly quickly established, the same is not true for his mother, of whom we know practically nothing at the end of Avatar: the way of the water.

Who is she really? Where is she ? And what are the exact circumstances of Spider’s birth? It’s between the pages of Avatar: The High Grounda trilogy of comic-books published last November, which you have to look for to discover it.

In these works signed by Sherri L. Smith, we indeed learn that Spider is actually called Miles Socorro and that his mother, a Scorpion spaceship pilot for the GDR, became pregnant with him after a relationship with Colonel Quaritch. Later, she was killed during the fierce battle between RDA and Na’vi forces at the end of the first Avatar.

Now an orphan, the young Miles was taken in by a certain McCosker in the base of the GDR, always keeping a photo of his mother on him. Very quickly, he felt cramped in the steel corridors of the human infrastructure and, fitting himself with a breathing mask, began to answer the call of the forest.

Befriending Jake Sully and his family – even if Neytiri never accepted him as one of them – the young boy therefore grew up in the middle of the Na’vi jungle. His talent for climbing and his mania for hanging on everywhere quickly earned him the nickname of Spider.
