Avatar: The Last Airbender (Netflix) – An exciting new teaser about the Water Tribe

Netflix continues to make fans’ mouths waterAvatar: The Last Airbender by multiplying the glimpses of its live-action version of this cult anime. The streaming platform has in fact posted a new teaser online which gives pride of place to a key element of the story: the Water Tribe.

The strength of the elements

Adapted from the anime created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko (which was entitled to three seasons and 62 episodes, broadcast on Nickelodeon starting in 2005), Avatar: The Last Airbender takes place in a world torn by war between the four elemental civilizations — those of water, earth, fire and air.

Only young Aang (Gordon Cormier) is capable of restoring balance. He thus embarks on a quest to fulfill his destiny as an Avatar. For this, he is accompanied by Katara (Kiwantiio) and Sokka (Ian Ousley), a brother and sister belonging to the Water Tribe.

It is this tribe that is highlighted in the new teaser for the Netflix series, which notably gives a glimpse of Katara’s powers as an apprentice Waterbender while Gran Gran (Casey Camp-Horinel) shares his knowledge :

An adaptation that is already controversial

Nickelodeon’s original anime was so successful that the show has achieved cult status, and a horde of galvanized fans are waiting for the Netflix version right around the corner.

Moreover, the series has already caused controversy due to a size change made to Sokka’s character. The latter is in fact particularly sexist in the original anime, a character trait which was not deemed acceptable for the adaptation.

At the microphone ofEntertainment Weeklythe interpreters of Katara and Sokka explained that the latter did not behave the same way in the Netflix series: “I think we left out how sexist Sokka was because there were a lot of questionable moments in the anime”Kiwantiio said.

If some see this change in a positive light, other fans judge that it distorts Sokka’s character because he learns, as the anime progresses, to see things differently and to reconsider his opinions regarding -towards women. Some fear that the character will therefore be deprived of any development in the Netflix series.

But as reported Variety, Sokka’s opinions aren’t the only things that will be different in the live-action series. Showrunner Albert Kim revealed that the Netflix series would not begin the same way as the anime, and that it would also show the genocide of the Air People by the Fire Nation, something the original show did not. was only mentioning.

Anyway, fans ofAvatar: The Last Airbender only have a few weeks to wait before seeing the Netflix production. Its eight episodes will arrive on the streaming platform on February 22.
