AVM FritzBox 5590 Fiber: New top model for fiber optics?

With FTTH connections (Fiber to the Home), the fiber optics reach into the living space. Many providers install an external modem here, to which any router can be connected via a LAN cable. With some connections, however, the fiber optic ends up directly in the router – the device then needs a corresponding modem. For these cases, AVM has the FritzBox 5530 Fiber in its range. Although the router masters the fast WLAN standard Wifi 6 (WLAN-ax), it ends up in the middle class in terms of speed and equipment. Anyone who is thirsty for a top-of-the-range fiber optic model will soon have reason to be happy: AVM will most likely be presenting the FritzBox 5590 Fiber this month.

FritzBox 5590 Fiber: Presentation at the MWC?

In a press release for the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC, February 28 to March 3, 2022 in Barcelona), AVM announces “a product premiere for fiber optics”. It is very likely that this is the top model FritzBox 5590 Fiber: A first firmware version for the device has already been spotted on the AVM servers (via Twitter). According to Caschy’s blog, the 5590, like the 5530, is suitable for both active (AON) and passive (GPON) fiber optic connections. Although it masters Wifi 6, with a maximum of 2,400 megabits per second (Mbps), it probably has less wireless performance than the new cable top model FritzBox 6690 Cable (up to 6,000 Mbps). A particularly fast WAN/LAN connection with 2,500 Mbps should be on board.

AVM: FritzOS 7.50 at the MWC

In addition to the fiber optic innovation, the upcoming firmware FritzOS 7.50 will play a role in the MWC. The version brings fresh functions for the first time since FritzOS 7.25 – this time it includes innovations for the FritzFon and the VPN method WireGuard. Trade fair visitors can look forward to a live presentation of the current beta version of FritzOS 7.50.
