Babelsberg celebrates sensation
First division fails in the DFB Cup

The Bundesliga clubs hold themselves harmless for a long time in the first main round of the DFB Cup, but in the evening the first one, Greuther Fürth, is eliminated. The Franks lose against fourth division Babelsberg on penalties. Nürnberg and St. Pauli barely avoid surprises.

SV Babelsberg – Greuther Fürth 5: 4 nE (2: 2, 1: 1)

SpVgg Greuther Fürth was the first Bundesliga club to be eliminated in the opening round of the DFB Cup. The promoted team lost 4-5 on penalties at the regional league club SV Babelsberg 03 from Potsdam, after extra time it was 2-2.

Before that, the first division clubs RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, VfB Stuttgart, FC Augsburg, Arminia Bielefeld and VfL Bochum all progressed. Vice champions Leipzig won 4-0 at second division SV Sandhausen, Leverkusen prevailed 3-0 at regional division 1. FC Lok Leipzig. Stuttgart even won 6-0 at the Berlin regional division BFC Dynamo.

Bundesliga promoted VfL Bochum, on the other hand, had to go into overtime at 2-1 at regional division Wuppertaler SV. For a long time, Augsburg also struggled at 4-2 at Greifswalder SC and Bielefeld at 6-3 at regional SpVgg Bayreuth. Promoted Bochum Bundesliga relegated Werder Bremen were eliminated 2-0 at third division VfL Osnabrück.

SSV Ulm – 1. FC Nürnberg 0: 1 (0: 0)

The four-time DFB Cup winner 1. FC Nürnberg survived the first main round with difficulty and thus also returned the favor for an old cup shame. Coach Robert Klauss’s team won 1-0 (0-0) at the regional division SSV Ulm 1846 and, unlike in the previous season, mastered the first hurdle. The goal was scored by the recently substituted Taylan Duman in the 79th minute. The traditional club from Franconia had previously only played a draw in the first two second division games and thus missed the desired start made to measure.

In the Danube Stadium in Ulm, the Nuremberg team rewarded themselves in the final phase for a solid performance with an increase in chances. Fabian Nürnberger (50th) should have taken care of the opening goal earlier. In the final phase, however, the guests were lucky that Ulm did not use two great chances to equalize late. 20 years ago, the FCN – back then as a Bundesliga team – lost 1: 2 at the fifth division team from Ulm. This time Nuremberg prevailed, although the two clubs are only two leagues apart instead of four as in 2001. For Nuremberg, the second division season continues next weekend with a home game against Fortuna Düsseldorf.

1. FC Magdeburg – FC St. Pauli 2: 3 (1: 2)

Third division club 1. FC Magdeburg missed a surprise against FC St. Pauli. Despite a clear chances overweight, the outsider was defeated by the more efficient second division 2: 3 (1: 2). In front of 14,405 spectators, Guido Burgstaller (3rd / 59th) and Jakov Medic (40th) met twice for Hamburg, Sirlord Conteh (31st / 54th) equalized each time.

Magdeburg started for the third time with the same team, at FC St. Pauli Dennis Smarsch started in goal and the second change was Simon Makeniok in the storm. The guests started powerfully and led before the FCM had found each other – Burgstaller hit the short corner. The FCM now had more of the game because St. Pauli was waiting and missed too many chances. Although Conteh managed to equalize after a counterattack, St. Pauli went into the break with a lead after Medic’s header.

The FCM continued to rely on fast outside players and a lot of pressure, the second division only did the bare minimum. The equalizer fell again after a long ball – Conteh turned around Smarsch and pushed in. St. Pauli came back immediately, after a free kick from Leart Paqarada to the post, Burgstaller dusted off in the end. The hosts dominated the game at will, but there was always one of the guests’ players in the way of all closings.
