Edgar Wright’s action movie, “Baby Driver” airs tonight on NRJ12. After the success of the feature film, the director began to write a sequel. Where is the project?
Released in our theaters in July 2017, Baby Driver by Edgar Wright (Scott Pilgrim, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) delighted viewers with an average of 3.9/5 stars for 13,219 ratings on AlloCiné and attracted 838 367 spectators in French cinemas. Baby Driver received acclaim in particular for its direction, editing and soundtrack.
With a budget of 34 million euros, the action film worn by Ansel Elgort, Kevin Spacey, Lily James, Jon Bernthal, Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx brought in $227 million at the international box office. Edgar Wright’s highest-grossing film in the world.
The feature film follows Baby (Ansel Elgort), driver for bank robbers, known to be one of the best. His thing? It rolls to the rhythm of its own playlist. When he meets the girl of his dreams, Baby seeks to put an end to his criminal activities in order to get back on the right track. But he is forced to work for a big crime boss and the robbery goes wrong… Now his freedom, his future with the girl he loves and his life are at stake.

From December 2017, the director talks about the sequel at the microphone ofEntertainment Weekly.
“If all goes well, I’m going to write the sequel. I have lots of ideas. I don’t know yet if it will be my next film. I’m just working on it. I’ve already developed a few ideas and I have new ones. I’d like to get back in the saddle quickly. It’s been 4 years between the release of Last Bar Before Doomsday and Baby Driver, I don’t want to wait that long anymore. I’d like to make a film within two years.“said Edgar Wright then.
Since this announcement, the British director has released not one but two films: the musical documentary The Sparks Brothers (in July 2021) and the fantastic thriller Last Night in Soho worn by Thomasin McKenzie, Anya Taylor-Joy and Matt Smith (released in October 2021). But no Baby Driver 2…

“It is written“
While promoting his Sparks movie, Wright once again talked about the sequel to his gangster flick. Confident in variety that he had taken advantage of the confinement to advance on Baby Driver 2, he adds: “It is written. To be honest, I’ve already written three drafts of the script.“
But nothing says that Edgar Wright will direct the second opus since he adds: “If I do the sequel I would have to find a way to make the project fun for me. The idea of just photocopying just isn’t appealing because these movies take at least two years to complete, and because of the pandemic, they’ve taken even longer. My rule of thumb is you have to really want to do it.”
Since then, no more announcements have been made around Baby Driver 2.
Edgar Wright has several projects on the go, including Running Man, a new adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, and The Chain, a thriller inspired by Adrian McKinty’s novel, in which Emma Stone could play.
The director will also be involved in the Netflix animated series Scott Pilgrim which will see all the stars of the original 2010 film returning to the voice cast.
