Baby Driver: what's next?

The action film "Baby Driver" is one of the surprise hits of 2017. What about the planned sequel with Ansel Elgort?

Director Edgar Wright (46) hit a surprise hit with the action thriller "Baby Driver" in 2017. The Brit also supplied the script. It's not just the gross profit of over $ 225 million that speaks for itself. In 2018, there were three Oscar nominations in the categories "Best Cut", "Best Sound" and "Best Sound Cut". In addition, the film on the well-known international critic portal "Rotten Tomatoes" has 92 percent approval among professionals and 86 percent among the audience. That cries out for a second part.

There should already be a script

Leading actor Ansel Elgort (26) in July 2019 in an interview with MTV says that he has already seen a draft of the script for the sequel. He also revealed at the time that the title would not be "Baby Driver 2". Elgort was optimistic. He believed that the continuation would come about. Director Edgar Wright also tweeted in July 2019 when asked by a fan for an update to part two that he hoped the sequel could be shot soon. But everything would have to fit together. And so far this has apparently not been the case.

In spring 2020, the rumor went through the internet that the sequel was allegedly given the green light by Sony Pictures. However, this was not confirmed, which is hardly surprising, especially with regard to the corona pandemic. As is well known, some film projects came to a standstill. In addition to Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Jon Bernthal, CJ Jones and Michael Peter Balzary – also known as Flea – are supposed to return for the second part of "Baby Driver". This has not yet been officially confirmed either. It means to wait further.

That's what "Baby Driver" is all about

"Baby Driver" is about the young getaway car driver Baby (Ansel Elgort), who has a special talent: When he plugs in the headphones and turns on his playlist, he is absolutely unbeatable behind the wheel. For gangster boss Doc (Kevin Spacey), he therefore takes over the logistics when it comes to carrying out the next raid. That changes as a baby, the waitress Debora (Lily James) meets and wants to get out of the business. He should do one last job, but everything goes wrong. Jamie Foxx, Jon Hamm and Eiza González can also be seen.

"Baby Driver" celebrates its German free TV premiere on RTL (or via TVNow) on Sunday, July 26, 2020 at 10:00 p.m.
