Baby girl born with extremely rare growth, doctors in shock

It’s a birth that doctors won’t soon forget. In a hospital in northeast Mexico, a baby girl was born with a tail, which was 5.7 cm long and with a diameter between 3 mm and 5 mm, as the Daily Mail explains. The structure of this outgrowth is described as cylindrical and pointed at its tip. Covered in hair and skin, the baby would have cried when this tail was pinched. Thus, health professionals performed an X-ray to verify that no bone structure was present inside. They discovered that the tail was made up of soft tissue, muscle and nerves.

The medical examinations did not stop there. Indeed, the baby underwent an MRI to verify that there was no cerebral abnormality. The little girl was operated on when she was two months old. The doctors were able to remove this tail which had grown very slightly and performed a plastic reconstruction. “The presence of tails in humans is extremely infrequent. In the most recent review by Tojima and Yamada in 2020, which collected English, French, Japanese, Italian and German case reports, there were no than 195 cases of human tails identified through 2017.”

A case that is not unique

However, this is not the first time a baby has been born with a tail. In 2021, a Brazilian infant was born with a 12cm tail with a strange ball hanging from the end. According to several health professionals, a tail can appear during pregnancy, but usually it disappears in the mother’s uterus before birth. Since then, the little girl has been in perfect health. No complications were detected following his operation.
