Baby shaken, a nanny sentenced to twelve years in prison

A nursery assistant from Loire-Atlantique was found guilty of the death of a six-month-old baby in her care. She was sentenced to twelve years in prison.

Marie-Thérèse Guyot maintained the same version during the 4 days of her trial. “I swear to you on everything I hold dearest in my life that I haven’t shaken Lubin “, she said in front of the Loire-Atlantique Assize Court. However, the nursery assistant did not convince the jurors and was sentenced to 12 years of criminal imprisonment for violence resulting in death without intention of giving it to a minor under the age of fifteen, by a person having authority. Indeed, the nanny was convicted of the death of a 6 month old baby boy in her care.

In November 2015, the baby had to be taken to the emergency room while in a coma. The little boy had bruises and hemorrhages characteristic of shaken baby syndrome. It is died as a result of a head trauma, caused by a very strong shaking. In 30 years of experience, Marie-Thérèse Guyot has never been talked about and has denied the facts to the end. According to her, the child was a victim “sudden and violent discomfort at the time of the change “, reports the newspaper West France.

What is shaken baby syndrome?

Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) refers to inflicted head trauma or non-accidental head injury (NTA), in which shaking, alone or in combination with an impact, causes a head injury. These jolts are violent, produced by manual grasping of the baby’s chest usually under the armpits. The sudden anteroposterior decelerations of the head create a sloshing of the brain in the cranial box and the tearing of the bridging veins located at the convexity. It most commonly occurs in an infant less than 1 year old, especially less than 6 months old.

Prematurity or perinatal medical complications, mother-to-child separation during the neonatal period or multiple or close pregnancy can be risk factors from an epidemiological point of view.

Some symptoms occur immediately after the shaking such as unusual drowsiness, body stiffness or loss of tone, abnormal movements or convulsions, difficulty in breathing, but also loss of appetite, vomiting, some irritability or even eye disorders.

Each year in France, several hundred children are victims of this form of abuse.
