Babylon Berlin: Season three more popular in the media library than on free TV

The third season of "Babylon Berlin" attracts an audience of millions in the ARD media library. However, the hit series is weakening in free TV.

The complete third season of the successful German series "Babylon Berlin" has been available in the ARD media library since October 11th. A move that is worthwhile for the first time. "By October 14th, a total of 4.2 million video views had been registered," the broadcaster announced on Thursday (October 16). Every day, around one million users stream the new twelve episodes, which are still available in the ARD media library until January 21, 2021. A complete success. But it looks different on free TV.

Season three weakens on free TV

The audience in the linear program continues to fall, as the media magazine "DWDL.de" reports. For the two episodes on Thursday (October 15), 3.13 million viewers tuned in, that is a market share of 9.9 percent – single-digit for the first time. This undercuts the previous low. The three episodes from Wednesday (October 14th) came according to "meedia" to 3.21 million viewers and a market share of 11.3 percent. The season premiere on October 11th had previously attracted 4.33 million viewers, a market share of 13.6 percent.

It looked completely different with the first two seasons in October 2018. At that time, 7.83 million viewers followed the first. With 5.27 million viewers, episodes four to six ensured a market share of 18.2 percent and the day's victory. Volker Herres, Program Director First German Television, announced an "excellent half-time result". He was able to report "almost five million video views and an average of six million viewers per episode for linear broadcasting".

In the third season, Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch, 40) and Charlotte Richter (Liv Lisa Fries, 29) investigate the film industry that is shaken by a series of murders. The 1929 stock market crash also played a role and Gottfried Wendt (Benno Fürmann, 48) was pushing his dodgy plans forward. In the last four episodes there is more than one gripping showdown. Episodes nine and ten will air on Wednesday, October 21, from 8:15 p.m. on Das Erste. The final episodes eleven and twelve the next day on Thursday, October 22, from 8:15 p.m.
