Altmaier: The crisis will be over in 2022
The corona pandemic plunges Germany into a deep crisis. But according to Minister for Economic Affairs Altmaier, the economy will have regained its “old strength” by next year. The CDU politician leaves it open whether further economic peaks will be necessary for this.
Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier assumes that Germany will find its way back to its economic strength next year and warns of tax increases. In an interview with the “Bild” newspaper, the CDU politician said: “The German economy will grow by between three and four percent this year. Germany will have regained its old strength in 2022.”
With a view to the economic aid of more than 100 billion euros, Altmaier said: “We were able to prevent a large wave of bankruptcies and secure millions of jobs.” Altmaier was open to further economic measures. We should “decide when all areas are open again so that they can work optimally”.
Altmaier criticizes the SPD’s demands for tax increases
Altmaier sharply criticized the coalition partner SPD: “Anyone who keeps talking about tax increases, wants to reintroduce wealth tax and is constantly brooding over more bureaucracy unsettles the many medium-sized businesses, small self-employed people, craftsmen and young people. That Olaf Scholz not only watches, but even himself involved, disappoints me. He urgently needs to speak a word of power in his party and ensure clarity on fundamental issues. “
Altmaier also told the “Rheinische Post” that he expected a significant increase in the vaccination rate in the coming weeks. “As Minister of Economics, I hope that the company doctors will be able to vaccinate as soon as possible, from June 7th,” says Altmaier. “I expect that we will receive so many vaccine deliveries within a very short period of time that we will get another real boost in vaccination.” This could protect everyone, “because it significantly reduces the likelihood of another corona wave,” said Altmaier. “Around 36 percent of the population have now received at least one vaccination.”
