Back to the future – Rimac sets a fabulous speed record in reverse gear

The Rimac Nevera, which has over 1,900 hp, was able to set more than 20 speed and braking records in the summer of 2023. Now another record has been added.

The Croatian electric hypercar is now considered the fastest car in reverse gear: Rimac test driver Goran Drndak achieved 275.74 km/h at the Automotive Testing Papenburg test site, in the presence of official “Guinness World Record” representatives. This sets the record. The distance to the previous fastest is impressive: racing driver Daniel Abt set the record in 2018 with an electric prototype from auto supplier Schaeffler at 209.7 km/h. Unlike a combustion car, the Rimac Nevera (like many others E-cars also have no actual reverse gear, and no manual transmission at all. In order to be able to drive backwards, the electric motors simply work in the opposite direction. Theoretically, the Rimac Nevera would have the same speed forwards and backwards if the aerodynamics were not designed for forward travel. The main challenge was driving stability, says Nevera chief engineer Matia Renic: “We quickly found out in simulations that we could reach well over 240 km/h reachable. But we had no idea how stable the car would be. This was completely new territory.” Record-breaking driver Goran Drndak needed some time to get used to reversing so quickly: “You look ahead while the landscape moves away from you faster and faster, while it pushes your head forward like an emergency stop . You look back at the track and the braking point via the rear-view mirror, move the steering wheel very gently so as not to lose your balance, and always keep an eye on the speed.” Already in the summer it has 1408 kW/1914 hp and 2360 Newton meter strong Nevera set several performance records for road-legal vehicles. This also includes a new forward sprint record from 0 to 400 km/h in 21.31 seconds.
