After two generations with a steel roof, Ferrari is back to a fabric top for its entry-level convertible. The now presented Roma Spider should be lighter and stiffer than its predecessor Portofino M due to the more traditional approach.
As a basis, the new roadster uses the Roma coupé presented in 2020, whose 620 hp 3.9-liter V8 petrol engine it also adopts. An oil-cooled dual-clutch transmission is responsible for power transmission to the rear wheels. The most important difference to the closed Roma is the five-layer soft top, which can be opened within 13.5 seconds while driving. The trunk is hardly affected by this, with 255 liters it holds almost as much as that of the coupé. The maximum speed of the Spider is over 320 km/h, 100 km/h is reached from a standing start after 3.4 seconds. It takes 9.7 seconds to reach 200 km/h. The Italians do not specify a value for fuel consumption, nor a price. The Roma Spider is Ferrari’s first soft-top convertible since the end of the mid-engined F430 Spider. With Calilfornia and Portofino, the two direct predecessors of the Roma Spider were two tin roof models. The brand’s last front-engine convertible with a fabric roof even dates back to 1969; at that time the 365 GTS4 celebrated its premiere.
