The balaclava can be seen on catwalks and in the Instagram feed. But how suitable for everyday use is the fashionable hermaphrodite made of hat and hood?

Winter is just around the corner and with it a trend that will divide opinions: If the balaclava doesn’t mean anything to you, you can probably imagine a little more under a knitted hood or a balaclava. Strictly speaking, it covers the head, neck and face, leaving the eyes and mouth free. Of course, there are fashionable variations, such as those proclaimed by the Miu Miu and Jacquemus brands as the winter accessory par excellence. Right?

The Duden defines a trend as a “statistically detectable trend that can already be observed over a certain period of time”. You don’t have to be that literal in the fashion world, but reports anyway the Lyst shopping platformthat search queries for knitted hoodies have risen by 64 percent – that would be the trend. The designers and bloggers have also discovered balaclava for themselves.

Balaclava: designers and bloggers alike love it

Influencer Paola Locatelli appeared at the Paris Fashion Week in a yellow knit model and combined it with a lush fur jacket. Blogger colleague Camille Charrière was also very enthusiastic about the Prada designs, like her on her Instagram channel made clear: At the autumn / winter show 2021 by Miu Miu, the younger second line from Miuccia Prada (72), many looks were combined with a balaclava.

The fact that the models are vaguely reminiscent of fabric bathing caps should only elicit a tired smile from many a fashionista. Women also save a scarf, but lose an accessory that we really don’t want to do without in autumn / winter styling. Conclusion: The knitted hood 2.0 comes in a new look and with a stylish name, but it is and remains a winter piece that you have to present with a lot of self-confidence and a cool head.
