Not only the right razor is important for a gentle shave, but also a shaving foam or gel promote a gentle and smooth shave. There are numerous offers from different manufacturers on the market, the prices can vary greatly.
ÖKO-TEST tested a total of 16 shaving products in its 6/2022 issue. In addition to cheap discounter products from 1 euro per 200 milliliters, expensive branded products were also tested, which cost up to 20 euros per 200 milliliters. The focus of the test is on the ingredients. The experts deduct points, for example, for critical substances such as musk compounds, halogenated organic compounds or mineral oil components.
The good news: You don’t have to dig deep into your pocket to get a perfect product. Of the 16 shaving products, five products performed “very well”, including the three certified natural cosmetics in the test. The other two test winners are also strong price tips: The Pure & Basic Lady’s Shaving Foam Sensitive from net is even cheaper than the Bevola shaving gel Peach from 1.05 euros Kaufland for 1.35 euros. Seven shaving products perform “well”.
Two other products, including the well-known Beiersdorf brand with the Nivea Gentle Shave shaving gel, still score “adequate”. The laboratory finds PEG/PEG derivatives and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) here. The latter is considered to be particularly irritating and should therefore not get onto open skin, especially when shaving. According to the manufacturer, the product has already been withdrawn from the market and is only sold in remaining batches.
Two other products failed the test with a rating of “poor”: Wilkinson Sword’s Hi Audrey Intuition Shave Cream Coconut and Procter & Gamble’s Satin Care Sensitive Aloe Vera Shaving Gel. Here, too, the laboratory found other questionable substances such as artificial musk scent and mineral oil components (MOAH).
