Ball bomb detonated – fireworks became a deadly trap in Lower Austria

The numerous fireworks and New Year’s Eve bangs were not without consequences at the turn of the year. New Year’s Eve ended particularly dramatically in the Baden district – here a young man was killed while igniting fireworks, and another was seriously injured. Overall, Lower Austria reported the worst New Year’s Eve results in years. And in Tyrol, too, there were critical situations involving pyrotechnic objects.

The men in Baden met around eight other people on a meadow in the municipality of Klausen Leopoldsdorf to celebrate New Year’s Eve. They detonated so-called bullet bombs. When one of the bombs did not go off immediately, four people approached the fireworks and it exploded, killing a 23-year-old from the district. A 21-year-old suffered serious injuries, a 19-year-old and another male were slightly injured, the police, who were alerted at around 0.30 a.m., reported in a broadcast taken to surrounding hospitals. Further surveys on the course of the accident as well as the crime scene work are carried out by a criminal police patrol of the district and the employees of the Alland police station. There is also an explosives-aware organ on site to check the pyrotechnic objects, the police said. A total of 221 emergency operations were reported in Lower Austria on New Year’s Eve – 13 more than in the previous year. There were 17 accidents, some of them serious, with fireworks, which, according to the Lower Austrian Emergency Call, is the worst New Year’s Eve balance in years. Fuse exploded in Tyrol There were also two incidents involving pyrotechnic objects, some serious injuries. In Weerberg, a 19-year-old Austrian wanted to ignite a rocket in front of the house. His 59-year-old father was standing right next to him. When the 19-year-old tried to ignite the rocket on the fuse, it suddenly exploded. The 19-year-old was seriously injured in both eyes as a result of the explosion. His father suffered a laceration on his left forehead and a hearing loss. In Achenkirch, a 42-year-old Austrian set off two class F2 fireworks batteries. Due to an interruption in the fireworks display, the man went to the battery. Exactly at the moment when he was with his face above the object, more fireworks from this battery detonated and hit him in the face. The man suffered a tear bruise below his left eye and an injury to his eye.
