Ballistic missiles rain down on Erbil, northern Iraq – officials

ERBIL, March 13 (Reuters) – A dozen ballistic missiles fired from abroad fell on Erbil in the Kurdish north of Iraq on Sunday, Kurdish officials said, adding that no casualties had been reported.

The attack was not immediately claimed. A US official who wished to remain anonymous told Reuters the attack was launched from Iran, but gave no further details.

According to the counter-terrorist forces of the Kurdistan region quoted by Iraqi state television, twelve missiles were fired from abroad and fell on Erbil.

US forces stationed at Erbil International Airport have been the target of attacks in the past. US officials blame them on Iran-aligned militias.

A US State Department spokesman said no US soldiers were injured in the attack.

The Kurdish representatives did not indicate the places where the missiles fell. A spokesman for the regional authorities said there had been no interruptions to air traffic at Erbil airport.
