Bananas are simply the perfect snack: they taste good, they’re healthy (just one banana covers 20 percent of your daily potassium requirement) – and they even come with their own “packaging” so that you can carry them in your backpack at any time or handbag and take it with you. Opinions differ only when it comes to storage – can the fruit go in the fridge now, right?

Banana Storage: From green to mushy – the banana ripening cycle

In any case, there are very different opinions about when the perfect time to eat a banana is. Many people are put off by the fact that the banana has brown spots on the skin. This is exactly the perfect degree of ripeness for optimal banana enjoyment! It is ideal when the banana has a brown stem, smells slightly sweet and shows dark spots on the skin (you can easily distinguish the small spots from large bruises, which of course are not a sign of ripeness).

Are green bananas particularly healthy?

The rumor still persists that green bananas are said to be particularly good for the body. However, this is only true to a limited extent: the fact is that unripe bananas have a lower fructose content and are therefore less fattening. However, they are also much harder to digest and can lead to unpleasant stomach problems if consumed in excess. Don’t forget: green bananas taste terribly bad!

And the fridge question?

The eternal argument in the flat share and family about the correct storage of bananas can be settled, because the question has really been clarified for a long time: As a tropical fruit, the banana does not like the cold and is extremely sensitive to extreme cold. It is best to put bananas in a bowl and let them ripen at room temperature for a few days. And if a banana should actually be a bit “overripe” at some point, that’s no problem either: After all, you can make delicious smoothies or cakes from overripe bananas!
