It’s official: Banksy is behind the mural that appeared in London yesterday. It quickly became a selfie hotspot.

Banksy has spoken out about a new mural that recently appeared on a wall in London. The mysterious street artist posted photos of the crime on his Instagram account. One shows the bare wall before the Banksy treatment and one shows the green painted wall after. The Insta post does not provide a comment, as is always the case when Banksy reveals himself to be the author of a work of art.

The graffiti appeared on Sunday (March 17, 2024) near Finsbury Park in north London. Green paint has been sprayed on a large scale on a desolate house wall. At the bottom left you can see a small figure holding something like a pressure hose in his hand. She is responsible for the color in the logic of the work.

Bare tree becomes green again

The highlight of the art event: there is a bare, trimmed tree in front of the wall. If you look at it with the wall in the background, the green color looks like leaves. The front garden, which had been improved in this way, quickly turned into a hotspot for selfies.

According to a BBC report, residents felt “proud and elated” that their neighborhood was chosen for the action. “Banksy came overnight and now my rent is going to go up,” someone wrote on X, who apparently lives in the painted house.

An increase in rents would be an unintended effect for Banksy, whose street art repeatedly highlights social injustices – in this case the disappearance of greenery from the city.

It is still not clear who is behind Banksy. The hottest candidate is the artist Robin Gunningham (50) from Bristol. Recently is an interview from 2003 surfacedin which the still little-known Banksy gives his first name as “Robbie”.
