Soon a sequel to “Barbie”? Warner would love to continue the adventure with screenwriter and director Greta Gerwig.
Warner’s bosswould love“doing a Barbie with Greta Gerwig, reports Deadlinevia BBC. Pam Abdy indicated that the studio “would very much like to give a sequel to this blockbuster which has won over audiences all over the world“. Discussions continue.
This is not the first time that this sequel project has been mentioned in the media. In the summer of 2023, shortly after the film’s release, the subject had already been raised. Ynon Kreiz, the CEO of Mattel, declared that Greta Gerwig’s Barbie was only “the start of a new franchise” and that the firm wanted to produce “more Barbie movies”. But this statement was quickly overturned by the director, Greta Gerwig, who declared on the microphone of New York Times that she had, to date, no ideas for a potential sequel to her film.

“For now, this is all I have. I feel like after each film, I will never have another idea and that everything I wanted to do, I I didn’t want to crush anyone else’s dream, but for me, right now, I’m at zero.” has explained Greta Gerwig.
For her part, Margot Robbie – also producer of the feature film about the famous doll – declared on the microphone of Colliderbefore the SAG-Aftra strike, that discussions were already underway for a possible continuation but that she did not wish to “fall in a trap” by planning something that is not achievable.
A first film that stands on its own?
The Barbie feature film is a standalone film that stands on its own, the sequel “could go a million different directions”. “I think you fall into a trap if you try to prepare a first film while planning sequels.” she continues.
Questioned again at the beginning of the year on the subject by Variety, Margot Robbie said a little more about a possible sequel. “It’s funny, this kind of impulsive reaction, these days, to immediately ask for a sequel. I don’t think it was like this 20 years ago. It wasn’t meant to be a trilogy..”

And added: “We put everything into this Barbie, and that’s how Greta Gerwig works. She gives everything and ends up exhausted, on her knees, as if she could never make another film afterward because she gave everything. So I don’t know what it might look like if we signed again. I think Warner would agree. I have no idea what it might look like.”
Other projects derived from the Mattel brand in the future
She continues, still in the columns of Variety: “We want to make more films that have the Barbie effect. I don’t know if it should be Barbie 2. Why couldn’t it be another big, original idea, with a great director, a big budget to play with, and the confidence of a big firm? That’s what I want.”
Remember that Mattel seems determined to continue its momentum and is also planning 45 films around their different games and toys. If Greta Gerwig does not wish to make a sequel to her film, Mattel Films should therefore look for another director. Especially since the director will very soon tackle two new adaptations of the Chronicles of Narnia, the famous fantasy novels by CS Lewis, for Netflix.
In the meantime, the studio has already planned several films adapted from its various toy licenses: Barney the Dinosaur produced by actor Daniel Kaluuya, a Hot Wheels film on which JJ Abrams is currently working, an adaptation of the game Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots with Vin Diesel and a Polly Pockets film to be directed by Lena Dunham with Lily Collins in the role of the miniature doll.
