TO REMEMBER

End of reign (provisional?) for Barbie ! This weekend, the US box office went from pink to blue as Greta Gerwig’s phenom film lost its top spot after four straight weeks at the top. And it is to Blue Beetle that we owe this little feat. With a paradox in the key.

With $25.4 million for its first weekend of operation, according to estimates released on Sunday, August 20, Blue Beetle signs the weakest start for a DC film. Behind that, already very disappointing, of Shazam 2 a few months ago.

The expectations were obviously not the same, because the character is less known. But the result is lower than the revised upward forecasts which amounted to 30 million. According to HollywoodReporterthis sluggish start could be linked to the passage of hurricane Hilary on the west coast of the United States, which would have had a real impact on cinema attendance.

The fact remains that Angel Manuel Soto’s film, the first to feature a Latino superhero, is at the top of the box office. Provided that the adjustments made with the final figures do not return Barbie to its leading position.

Whether that happens or not, the feature film by Greta Gerwig (which could well find its throne as soon as next week) is on track to become the undisputed champion of 2023. In the United States and around the world, where it will overtake Super Mario Bros. in the coming days.

Another phenomenon, even more unexpected: Oppenheimer. Third in the box office this weekend, Christopher Nolan’s new opus is not far from beating Inception’s score on American soil, even if it will be impossible for him to pick up The Dark Knight and his next after.

But whatever. The feature film is already a huge success, and it is also the case in the rest of the world. With $717.9 million in revenue, it just overtook Fast & Furious X and Spider-Man – Across the Spider-Verse to become the fourth biggest hit of the year. And it is now ahead of Interstellar in the career of its director.

Behind this leading trio, there are animals struggling: the turtles of ninja turtles, which sail serenely towards the milestone of 100 million dollars on American soil. Adult Comedy Dogs Backstreet Dogs, the second novelty of this ranking. And the giant sharkIn very troubled waterswhich will have a hard time crunching the score of its predecessor.

In the rest of the ranking, mission impossible 7 continues its half-hearted course, but should very soon exceed the first episode in the United States, and the second in the world, where it should end its run around 600 million dollars in revenue.
