End of reign (provisional?) for Barbie ! This weekend, the US box office went from pink to blue as Greta Gerwig’s phenom film lost its top spot after four straight weeks at the top. And it is to Blue Beetle that we owe this little feat. With a paradox in the key.
With $25.4 million for its first weekend of operation, according to estimates released on Sunday, August 20, Blue Beetle signs the weakest start for a DC film. Behind that, already very disappointing, of Shazam 2 a few months ago.
The expectations were obviously not the same, because the character is less known. But the result is lower than the revised upward forecasts which amounted to 30 million. According to HollywoodReporterthis sluggish start could be linked to the passage of hurricane Hilary on the west coast of the United States, which would have had a real impact on cinema attendance.
The fact remains that Angel Manuel Soto’s film, the first to feature a Latino superhero, is at the top of the box office. Provided that the adjustments made with the final figures do not return Barbie to its leading position.
