Filmmaker worried about her career while writing
Director Greta Gerwig had great respect for working on the first live-action film of “Barbie”. She even feared that the production could destroy her career.

Director Greta Gerwig feared while working on “Barbie” that the film could end her career.
“Barbie” director Greta Gerwig (39, “Little Women”) has revealed that she was afraid for her career while working on the live-action film. Writing the script was “terrifying,” she told singer Dua Lipa (27) in their podcast “At Your Service”. “It felt like giddiness when I started writing it. Like, where do you even start? What would the story look like?”
But something about the work also fascinated her. “I think it was the feeling I had that it was going to be really interesting terror,” said the 39-year-old. “Usually that’s the best thing. When you say to yourself, ‘This is what I’m scared of.’ If you’re thinking, ‘This could end your career,’ you’re thinking, ‘Okay, I probably should,'” Gerwig said. She wrote the script together with her partner Noah Baumbach (53).
Director had great freedom
Mattel – the toy company that makes the “Barbie” dolls – gave her a lot of freedom, Gerwig said. This allowed her to develop her own vision for the script and the look of the film. That was “incredibly rare,” praised the director. “Whatever we wanted to be, they didn’t try to control it in detail. I was given a lot of support in what I wanted to do,” explained Gerwig. “Usually I know by gut feeling if something feels right.”
The film stars Margot Robbie (32) as Barbie and Ryan Gosling (42) as Ken. The theatrical release of “Barbie” is planned for July 2023. Robbie and Gosling can already be seen in bright pink outfits in leaked pictures. But there is probably much more to come.
Variety of costumes announced
Gerwig betrayed “Variety” most recently that Ryan Gosling will appear as Ken in significantly more costumes than previously known. A platinum-colored mop top, personalized underwear and a robust denim outfit are just “one of many extraordinary looks” that fans can look forward to. The filmmaker said she was “thrilled” by the audience’s fascination with Gosling’s costume. “That’s how I felt and that’s how Margot felt and I’m thrilled that everyone shares that feeling.”
