After “Barbie”, Greta Gerwig confides in her fear of carrying out her next project: two “Narnia” films please!
Although rumors have been circulating online for several months, it wasn’t until a recent New Yorker profile that confirmation arrived: Greta Gerwig will be tackling two new film adaptations of the Chronicles of Narniathe famous fantasy novels of CS Lewis, and this for Netflix.
In an interview with Total Film (via Variety), the Barbie director opened up on the subject.
I haven’t even really started to get my hands on it, but I’m really scared of it, which seems like a good place to start. I think when I’m scared, it’s always a good sign. Maybe when I stop being scared, I’ll have to be like, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t do this one.’ No, I’m terrified. It’s extraordinary. And it’s exciting.
Considering the rave reviews and incredible box office estimates for Barbie and after its very successful adaptation The Daughters of Doctor March, it seems that Greta Gerwig already knows the secret to bringing beloved intellectual properties to the big screen. Narnia will mark his fantasy debut.
As a reminder, three Narnia films were released between 2005 and 2010: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Prince Caspian and The Odyssey of the Dawn Treader. The first part, stamped Disney, was a critical success as well as at the box office with 745 million dollars in worldwide receipts. Then, in 2018, Netflix announced it had secured the rights to Lewis’ beloved series, later handing over the project to Greta Gerwig.
“I hope to make all kinds of films during the time I can make films, which is long, but also limited”, she added. “I want to do big things and small things and everywhere in between, and having another big canvas is exciting and also intimidating.”
