Barbie: Finally on stream! When will the hit film with Margot Robbie come to Netflix, Sky and Co.?

• 52 days after its successful theatrical release, Warner Bros. has also started offering “Barbie” on stream.
• You can currently rent and buy the film, but you’ll have to dig deep into your pockets to do so.
• It probably won’t be cheaper until October and a release on Netflix isn’t out of the question.

While the film authors and actors in the USA are on strike and are even foregoing any form of salary, the film studios are swimming in money – at least Warner Bros., because the success of “Barbie” has been going on for weeks and is generating high income. That’s why David Zaslav, the CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, sounded pleased during a recent call with Warner investors.

The conversation was primarily about Warner Bros.’s financial situation; after all, investors want to know whether their money is in good hands. Zaslav explained that he expects the strike to end in September 2023, but also added that the company has saved over $100 million since the strike began – after all, significantly fewer salaries were paid and hardly any projects were implemented.

The disadvantages of the strike will only be felt by Warner Bros. later, namely when there will be a lack of films and series that would normally have been made at that time. Of course, Zaslav doesn’t talk about that, but rather concentrates on the success of “Barbie” – and the future of the film in streaming.

Rent and buy “Barbie” online now

Zaslav emphasized once again that Warner Bros. believes in the great importance of theatrical releases – two years after Warner released all films directly on the streaming service HBO Max during the corona pandemic. “Barbie” should stay in theaters until interest in the film wanes.

However, since September 12, 2023, it has now been possible to watch “Barbie” in the stream. You can buy the film on Amazon for 19.99 euros; 15.99 euros will be charged if you just want to rent “Barbie” for the time being.

Afterwards we can expect the release on DVD and Blu-Ray and the start on streaming services – in the USA this is MAX (formerly HBO Max), the streaming service from Warner Bros. Discovery. “Barbie” is scheduled to land there in autumn 2023, an exact month is not yet known. Certainly not a coincidence, because further cinema success ultimately decides whether “Barbie” can be expected in October or November.

A stream start on Max in September 2023 would certainly be too early, but after the PVOD release at the beginning of September, the DVD and Blu-Ray of the film will be released on October 19, 2023. Around the same time, digital rental and purchase prices for “Barbie” were also expected to drop.

MAX doesn’t exist in Germany, but most Warner Bros. films appear first on Sky and Wow. It’s rare here to be as fast as in the USA, so you can’t expect “Barbie” on Sky until winter. Of course, you will be able to buy “Barbie” earlier on Amazon or iTunes, but “Barbie” will not end up on Amazon Prime Video or Netflix streaming subscriptions until 2024 at the earliest.

A little patience is necessary everywhere in the world if you want to see “Barbie” on stream and not in the cinema. However, you can already experience other current films, such as “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” or “Miraculous: Ladybug & Cat Noir – The Movie” on your sofa at home.
