Director Greta Gerwig had a huge hit last year with “Barbie”. But the film wasn’t well received by Shakira.

Shakira (47) is not a fan of “Barbie”. The singer tells the magazine “Allure” that both she and her two children Milan (11) and Sasha (9) have little to gain from the 2023 hype film. “My sons absolutely hated it,” explains the “Waka Waka” interpreter about the film by director Greta Gerwig (40).

“They thought he was emasculating. And I agree with them, to a certain extent,” she says. Shakira encourages her sons to respect women while still feeling strong. “I like pop culture when it tries to empower women without taking away men’s ability to be men, including to protect and provide,” she says in the interview.

According to Shakira, each gender has its tasks

According to Shakira, women should trust that they can do anything and not lose “our essence, our femininity” in the process. “I believe that men have a task in society and women have a different task. We complement each other and this complement should not be lost,” says the musician. Of course, that doesn’t mean that patriarchy doesn’t exist.

Her role model was Wonder Woman

Since her childhood, Shakira has modeled herself on a superhero when it comes to emancipation. “My idol was Wonder Woman. I think I was drawn to her because she had black hair like me, but also because she was a symbol of empowerment and strength in a decade where women didn’t play the most important roles.” , she enthuses about the comic character.
