Barbora Krejcikova dismisses Cori Gauff to play first Grand Slam semi-final

Czech Barbora Krejcikova, 33e world player, is the first qualified for the semi-finals of the 2021 edition of the Roland-Garros tournament. Wednesday, June 9, she defeated the American Cori “Coco” Gauff in two sets (7-6, 6-3), opening, for the first time, at 25, the doors of a half -final in Grand Slam.

The latter had yet made a very strong start to the match, dominating her opponent from the baseline. But the opening set ended up being a succession of missed opportunities for the 17-year-old prodigy, who was missing no less than five set points. In the tie-break, his opponent managed to snatch the first set, helped by the many shots in the net of his opponent.

After this first battle of an hour and ten, Barbora Krejcikova took the upper hand mentally in a second set completely missed by Cori Gauff. The American did not solve her problems with the net and was irritated by her faults, to the point of losing her usual serenity and breaking her racquet, after a double fault and a shutout conceded on her serve.

The trend was reversed briefly, Barbora Krejcikova being unable to conclude on her first five match points. But the sixth was the right one for the Czech, who will face in the semi-finals the winner of the meeting between the Greek Maria Sakkari and the Polish Iga Swiatek, winner of the 2020 edition of the Paris tournament.
