After TikTok, there is now TikTok Lite and its unique reward service. A new project that worries European authorities.

ByteDance thought it had made a big splash when it released its new TikTok Lite application last week in France and Spain. A lighter version of TikTok, it has the particularity of encouraging users to stay on the application by rewarding the consumption of content with the payment of Amazon cards. But the model does not really please the European authorities, who let the Chinese giant know by demanding additional information.

A 24 hour ultimatum

Information travels quickly in Brussels, as do the reactions of the European Commission. TikTok Lite had barely arrived in the smartphones of the continent’s first consumers when the European executive sent a warning shot to the ByteDance group, which owns TikTok.

It has in fact just issued a request for information to the Chinese giant. “ TikTok must provide the risk assessment for TikTok Lite within 24 hours and other requested information by April 26, 2024, after which the Commission will analyze TikTok’s response and then assess next steps » indicates the press release, published on Wednesday April 17.

As the same text points out, this request for information does not necessarily bode well for more serious subsequent action. But it remains a request to be respected, under penalty of being fined, as permitted by the Digital Services Act (DSA).

Brussels worried about the impact of this new application

Requirement ” concerns the potential impact of the new “Task and Reward Lite” program on the protection of minors, as well as on the mental health of users, particularly with regard to the potential stimulation of addictive behaviors. The Commission also requests information on the measures put in place by the platform to mitigate these systemic risks. »

Not enough to lighten the TikTok file currently on the desk of the European Commission. Because the application is already the subject of another investigation, launched at the beginning of this year, because of alleged breaches in the protection of minors. » Should the favorite application of the younger generation expect a complicated year on the old Continent?
