“Barney” is back. The childhood hero of the 90s gets a new live-action adaptation, but not for children. The new film is said to be aimed at adults who grew up with the purple dino.

Cheerful, colorful and child-friendly becomes dark and mature. The friendly Dino “Barney”, who delighted numerous children in the 90s, receives a new live-action adaptation, which this time is intended to be aimed primarily at an older audience.
In an interview with the US magazine “New Yorker”, Kevin McKeon, vice president for films at the toy company Mattel, describes Daniel Kaluuya’s project (“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”) as surrealistic. The film aims to play on the fear of millennials who grew up with the purple dino.
It really is an adult film. Not that it’s rated R (FSK 16), but it will focus on some of the struggles and struggles of being in your thirties and growing up with Barney – showing the level of disillusionment within the Generation.

The businessman also compares the upcoming “Barney” film with a production by Studios A24, which is responsible for films such as “Ex Machina”, “Midsommar” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once”. He notes that their plan is a gamble and they plan to “create art”.
The film about 90s cult figure Barney was already announced in 2019. Director Kaluuya described Barney at the time as “a ubiquitous figure from our childhood who has been lost in the shadows and misunderstood.”
