Bas Dost: “I’m fine”
Ex-Bundesliga professional collapses on the pitch

Suddenly Bas Dost collapses on the pitch during his NEC Nijmegen’s game against AZ Alkmaar. The former Bundesliga professional needs to be resuscitated. After anxious minutes, the first all-clear was given about the 34-year-old’s health. He later reports from the hospital.

Former Bundesliga professional Bas Dost collapsed dramatically while his Dutch club NEC Nijmegen was playing at AZ Alkmaar. The 34-year-old collapsed in injury time in the center circle without any opposition and lay motionless on his back. After anxious minutes of first aid, AZ announced that Dost was conscious and responsive. “Bas Dost is fortunately conscious. We wish you much recovery and strength, Bas,” Alkmaar posted on social media. According to Nijmegen, Dost was taken to hospital.

Dost later spoke up himself: “I’m doing well. The help I received on site was fantastic. I’m in the hospital now and I’m doing well. Thanks for all the support!” wrote the professional via Nijmegens X-profile and showed himself in a photo in the hospital bed with his thumbs up.

Nijmegen director Wilco van Schaik said on ESPN: “Nobody here knew what happened until referee Jeroen Manschot said there was a sign of life and Bas was alive again. I think Bas was lucky that the medical team arrived so quickly .” As “De Gelderlander” reported, Dost gave another thumbs up as he left the field on a stretcher to the applause of the spectators. Later in the cabin, Dost was already sitting up on the stretcher when his father arrived and he called his wife to calm her down, the newspaper reported.

Former clubs wish you a speedy recovery

The game even continued for a few seconds before the referee noticed Dost’s collapse. He then immediately interrupted the game to enable rescue measures. The players formed a privacy screen around the doctors, shielding the treatment from view. You could see the shock on their faces. The game was initially interrupted and then canceled after the incident. Nijmegen had led 2-1, the former Wolfsburg and Frankfurt player Dost had scored 1-0.

The club posted a picture of the striker on social media with a red heart. VfL Wolfsburg, one of Dost’s former clubs, wrote under the post: “Get well soon, Bas” and included praying hands and a green heart. Eintracht Frankfurt, the striker’s second former club in the Bundesliga, also said: “The Eintracht family is thinking of you and wishes you a full recovery.”

The collapse brought back memories of the collapse of Dane Christian Eriksen, who barely survived a cardiac arrest on the field at the 2021 European Championships. He now plays for Manchester United with a defibrillator.

Dost played at VfL Wolfsburg from 2012 to 2016 and was DFB Cup winner, German Supercup winner and runner-up with Lower Saxony. From 2019 to 2020 he played for Eintracht Frankfurt.
