Base wage rises to eleven euros
Lieferando provides equipment and pays better

Food delivery service Lieferando is improving the working conditions in the company in the fight for delivery personnel – and thus fulfills some requirements that many drivers have long been burning for a long time. There will be more money in the future – and the company will provide bicycles and mobile phones.

The food delivery service Lieferando is improving working conditions and increasing wages: Drivers would be offered a company bike and smartphone including a data flat rate, said Lieferando. The basic wage has risen to eleven euros per hour since January 1, which is one euro higher than before. However, the food and grocery delivery industry is currently booming. It is becoming increasingly difficult for companies to find drivers.

Lieferando manager Alexander Linden explained: “Our couriers do an excellent job for our restaurant partners and customers. We support them with a unique overall package of permanent direct employment, first-class payment and unique equipment.”

Provided bike or mileage allowance

From February onwards, all employees should be able to choose between a bike provided by Lieferando, a leasing bike or their own bike. So far, this has only been the case in 15 large cities; Lieferando is present in around 60 cities. If you lease or use your own bike, the company pays a mileage allowance. According to Lieferando, the kilometer flat rate is 14 cents. The couriers can rent the leasing bikes at a discount. From February to the end of March, all around 10,000 drivers are to receive a smartphone with a data flat rate for business use. It was waterproof and shockproof, said Lieferando. A maintenance and damage service is included.

The wages of eleven euros per hour are paid regardless of how much the couriers deliver, whether they are waiting for an order or are on sick leave or on vacation, as Lieferando emphasized. There are also delivery bonuses and mileage allowances. According to Lieferando, these allow earnings of up to 18 euros per hour; in Germany-wide monthly average it is therefore more than 13 euros.

Union warns against hate speech

The food-pleasure-restaurants union had demanded an hourly wage of at least 15 euros for Lieferando employees in the summer. Employees of the delivery service also demand payment of a 13th month’s salary, supplements for shifts in the evening, on Sundays and public holidays, six weeks’ vacation entitlement and full payment for the last trip back to the place of residence. Instead, the bonus system had to go, said the union’s hospitality expert, Christoph Schink. Because that would lead to dangerous agitation.

The company has been employing its couriers on a regular basis since 2016 and, according to its own information, has been offering open-ended contracts since November 2021. On average, the couriers deliver two orders per hour and travel around five kilometers per hour. Lieferando belongs to the Dutch company Just Eat Takeaway.
