Basketball: a Swede joins CSKA Moscow, excluded from European cups

Swedish basketball player Jonas Jerebko, who played in the NBA between 2009 and 2019, has joined CSKA Moscow, a team excluded from the Euroleague following the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army, announced the club on Wednesday.

We wanted to add an experienced player to the power forward position, and we needed it with the new circumstances. The current market does not offer us many possibilities. Jonas was thrilled to come and play with us“, rejoiced Dimitris Itoudis, the coach of CSKA Moscow.

I am honored to be part of CSKA, a club with such a history. I was waiting for the opportunity to play basketball again and I am very happy to join the teamexplained the Sweden international, who was without a club after finishing the 2020/21 season at Khimki Moscow.

Drafted in 2009 in 39th position by the Detroit Pistons, Jonas Jerebko played for ten seasons in the NBA, at the Pistons, at the Boston Celtics, at the Utah Jazz and at the Golden State Warriors.

CSKA Moscow, a club historically from the Red Army, was excluded from the Euroleague, like Zenit Saint Petersburg and Kazan, after the invasion of Ukraine launched on February 24 by the Russian army.
