Batik: The retro pattern is making a fashion comeback

What picture do you have in mind when you hear batik? Up until now we had to think of the self-made shirts in brightly colored screech colors that we proudly wore in elementary school. As children we found the parts to be really cool, but as adults you could only wear them if you belonged to a hippie group. Until now! Because for all 70s fans we have good news: Batik is back!

In contrast to our youth, in 2020 we will not do the wild slush in our own four walls, because our favorite designers have breathed new life into the retro pattern and given it a fashionable update. Instead of adventurous color blocking, the dip dye looks now come in delicate pastel tones or trendy neon shades, which make the trend even suitable for the office. Perfect tailoring and fine materials such as silk or satin do the rest, so that in future no one will think of hippies in worn cotton shirts as soon as they hear the term batik.

Well-known labels such as Prada, Dior or Proenza Schouler have already shown how the whole thing can look. Some of them sent their models across the catwalk in all-over batik looks, taking the hearts of fashionistas worldwide by storm.

Christian Dior relies on delicate silk batik dresses.

No experiments in styling batik

Nothing works without batik this summer. Luckily, the trend pattern is very easy to style, because apart from a few basics you don't need much here. The print, which originally comes from Indonesia, is a real eye-catcher, so the rest of the look should be restrained and not steal it from the show. Rely on clean cuts, subtle colors and high-quality materials and you are perfectly prepared for the upcoming fashion season.

Anyone who does not want to do without a hint of hippie in spite of all this can of course still get the 70s shirt from the store. Simply style it into cool jeans with a high waist and combine a few heels with it – et volià, and the discarded favorite piece from back then will make it big again.
