Battlefield 2042 puts the Hazard Zone mode in the closet

If the detailed presentation of season 1 will wait a little longer, we already know that it will come with a new map, a new specialist class, new weapons, a new vehicle, weekly missions and content from Portal mode. Improvements are also expected in character animation and mobility.

What this briefing tells us is that the team also intends to rework certain maps, starting with Kaleidoscope which will have richer environments, new possibilities for taking cover and destructible elements to make the less smooth environment and just to make it look more like a real battlefield. Kaleidoscope 2.0 is expected to be available towards the end of Season 1 in August, after which DICE will look into Renwal’s redesign and specialist tweaks (appearances, dialogue, feel) for Season 2.

We had already understood with the disappearance of the 128-player Breakthrough mode, deleting or setting aside modes is no longer taboo as long as the sacrifice is deemed beneficial in the long term. It is therefore the end of the journey for Hazard Zone, a cooperative survival experience which was nevertheless to be one of the three essential pillars of the game alongside the All-Out Warfare and Portal modes. In fact, Hazard Zone remains accessible but will be abandoned to allow developers to focus on the most unifying modes. This means in particular that the new maps will not be compatible with the Hazard Zone mode.
