(Reuters) – Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky on Friday presented a decoration to the head of the Turkish company that manufactures Bayraktar combat drones and announced that it would open a factory in Ukraine.

Bayraktar TB2 drones designed by the Baykar company have played a decisive role since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, destroying numerous Russian military targets and contributing to the resistance of the Kyiv army against an enemy with the power of significantly higher fire.

“We discussed the terms of building a Baykar factory in Ukraine and producing new products using Ukrainian components,” Volodimir Zelensky said in a post on the internet.

In a video, the Ukrainian president is seen decorating Baykar CEO Haluk Bayraktar with the Order of Merit.

Turkey has allowed the sale of many Bayraktar TB2 drones to Kyiv despite protests from Russia.
