Be sure to check the commas – Here’s how

One of the toughest parts of the German language is the comma, which many people rack their brains about. We will show you how and where you can correct your comma errors.

The comma is as important as it is nerve-wracking when writing texts. After all, there are some very clear rules, but there are exceptions to these in certain cases. And so it happens that commas are in places where they shouldn’t be or where they are missing. This is exactly why there are services like DeepKomma.de, Spellcheck24.de and Duden.de, which are quite useful for checking commas. GIGA introduces them to you.

Do you write your texts in Word? In the video you will find five practical tips on special characters, spell checking and more:

Exclusively for the comma placement check: Deep.Komma.de

With this tool, the name says it all. Only commas are corrected here; In contrast to the other tools, spelling or other grammatical errors are not addressed. And this is how you use DeepComma:

  • Enter or copy the text to be corrected into the text field.
  • The correction is started with the play button.
  • The text field is emptied again with the eraser symbol.
  • Click on the left button to copy the text.
  • After the correction has been started, the entered text will appear again below. Commas in places where they shouldn’t be are marked in red. Missing commas are inserted by the program itself and marked in green.

However, it should not be forgotten that the checked text cannot simply be copied again. Finally, the incorrect commas are only marked in red, but not deleted. You have to do this work yourself, but there is at least a learning effect.

In addition to the websites presented here, there are many others that can be useful to you. We present 33 of them in a series of pictures:

Not just for checking commas: Rechtschriftprüfung24.de

Spellcheck24.de not only corrects commas, but all other errors as well. However, there is also a paid premium version with which, among other things, only 100 more errors are detected. The full potential is not drawn from the free version.

  • Again, the text must be copied or typed into the field.
  • The tool is activated under “Start test”.
  • Errors are marked in yellow. If you click on these markings, a field opens with the error description and how the error can be corrected.
  • The now corrected text can be copied in the free version.

The classic: Duden.de

The Duden Mentor also offers a paid version, but the free version already corrects grammatical and spelling errors.

  • Critical points are marked in yellow.
  • If you click on these, you will see suggestions that can be accepted or rejected.
  • In addition, there are grammatical explanations for the respective suggestions.
  • At the bottom right of the text field, the text can be copied to the clipboard or deleted.

When in doubt, your own mind

While all of the tools mentioned are useful, none of them can be relied on 100%. So it certainly pays to have some comma rules in mind. The most well-known rule is probably that Commas in enumerations occur, but with the exception when the sequences are connected by “or” or “and” respectively: “The film is very well written, acted and produced.” However, commas may be used in main clauses “The film has won many awards and the book is very successful.” Additionally, subordinate clauses are separated from the parent clause by commas: “I’ll play the game as soon as it comes out.”

There are some exceptions to these rules, which is why a complete overview would go beyond the scope here. You can find the rules already mentioned with regard to comma placement and a fairly detailed overview in the corresponding Duden article. With the combination of the tools mentioned and the knowledge, you should be well prepared to check your commas. In addition, if you use Firefox, you can activate the spell check in the browser and thus, for example, check longer texts before publishing them.
