  • At the Beach Volleyball World Cup in Tlaxcala (MEX), the Czechs Ondrej Perusic/David Pigner secured the men’s title against the Swedes David Ahman/Jonatan Hellvig (21:15, 17:21, 15:13).
  • In the women’s world championship gold goes to the US duo Sara Hughes/Kelly Cheng after a clear final victory over Ana Patricia/Duda.
  • The new world champions have already secured their ticket to the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

In the repeat of the 2022 European Championship final, Ondrej Perusic/David Pigner (CZE) achieved revenge against David Ahman/Jonatan Hellvig (SWE). In a close game, the Czech duo laid the foundation for success in the first set. Perusic/Schweiner controlled the majority of the rallies and clearly won the first round with a score of 21:15. The Swedes then increased their game and equalized after sets.

However, the Czech duo didn’t let that bother them. In the deciding set they returned to their best game and in the end deservedly crowned themselves world champions for the first time. Pigner in particular showed an extremely strong performance in the final; the 29-year-old was repeatedly played and was responsible for 37 points. The Czech duo went on a real improvement run in Mexico: in the group phase they lost twice in three games and only narrowly progressed.

Outsider victory for women

Ten years after winning bronze at the U19 World Championships, Sara Hughes/Kelly Cheng have gone one better. The US duo secured gold at the “big ones” in Mexico after a 21:16, 24:22 over world number 1 Ana Patricia/Duda (BRA).

Like the Czechs with the men, Hughes/Cheng also took advantage of their opponents early on and set the course in the desired direction early on. Even though Patricia/Duda improved noticeably, the turnaround was no longer possible. With a powerful smash on the third match point, the outsiders completed their victory.
