On Thursday, an incident occurred in the bear enclosure of the Goldau Nature and Animal Park, as a result of which a female bear was euthanized.

As the zoo announced on Friday, the 14-year-old male Syrian brown bear Takis and the 31-year-old bear Laila collided in the community facility because of an open slider.

All attempts to separate the two bears have failed, the zoo writes. Laila was then euthanized due to her injuries. The incident happened behind the scenes and was not visible to visitors to the zoo.

In the shared facility for bears and wolves in the Tierpark Goldau, the bears – who also roam around in nature as loners – live in separate compartments. In the afternoon, the bears are brought into the barn so that food can be distributed in the facility to keep them busy.

The behavior of the male bear Takis is natural, the statement continues. Because in nature, an old she-bear that is no longer able to reproduce and thus no longer serves to preserve the species is attacked by her fellow bears to make room for younger animals. At 31, Laila was already very old and had to be operated on for a tumor last fall.

This encouraged Takis’ behavior – the incident will not have any consequences for him. The Nature and Animal Park Goldau regrets this unfortunate incident. Despite all precautions, there is always a certain residual risk when working with animals.
