Beaten, street child, orphan, the incredible fate of Miss Belgium

Kedist Deltour alias Miss Belgium was crowned in April 2021. Nothing predestined the young woman to this title, she who had dreamed so much … Her destiny is that of a modern Cinderella, independent and not saved by a prince !

The new Miss Belgium, elected in April 2021, is called Kedist Deltour. And her fate is worthy of a modern Cinderella. Born in Ethiopia in Addis Ababa, she grew up in a poor, but happy family, surrounded by her parents and her brother and sister. When she was 8 years old, her mother was diagnosed with cancer. The little girl is sorry to see her mother, adored figure, wither away and lose her beautiful hair. The cancer ends up taking its mother. Kedist’s father then falls in love with another woman. This stepmother turns out to be worthy of a nasty tale: tyrannical, she beats her stepchildren, takes them out of school and lets them hang out in the streets almost hungry. She ends up convincing the father to leave them at the door of an orphanage in the city. Kedist recounts a terrible scene, where his younger brother screams and clings to his father’s leg, who struggles to get a look at him. The little girl suddenly feels herself becoming fully adult and responsible for her little brother and sister.
Once at the orphanage, Kedist’s woes are not over. Aged 9, she is one of the deans of the orphanage and as such is entrusted with many tasks. She tells : “Normally you can’t be adopted at this age. So I also had to help with the housework, take care of the children, wash them, dress them. I didn’t have a lot of freedom there either.” The little girl is distressed at the idea that at 10 she will probably be expelled from the orphanage, because she is too old. Here she tells her story to RTBF.

A childhood dream

Finally, a Belgian family adopts the siblings. Kedist then begins a new life in Belgium. She recounts the emotion of leaving the orphanage, but also how strange it was for her to follow strangers who became her family. She arrives at the age of ten, already almost pre-teenager and having to start school again, while learning Dutch. Today, the young woman has become a hairdresser in tribute to her missing mother. She shines by recounting her election and mischievously confides that fries and carbonades are her favorite dish. The one who has always dreamed of being Miss Belgium finally sees her dream come true. The young woman would like to continue in the mannequin and compete in Miss Universe. Crowned as a princess, Kedist truly has a modern fairytale destiny: independent and successful on her own!
