Hair coloring is now totally normal for many, some don’t even know what their “real” hair color actually looks like. Too bad! Our editor tells you what she learned after four years without dyeing her hair.

We all get bored of our hairstyle at some point and we all feel the need to change something at some point. I first colored my hair when I was 14. From drugstore hair colors to pink highlights to platinum blonde hair and extensions. I really had everything. However, I haven’t been coloring for about four years – and I’ve learned these lessons in the process.

It’s a match

Your natural hair color is boring and somehow not fancy at all? That’s not true! After changing the hair color for years, I didn’t even know what my own hair color actually looked like. Only now do I really appreciate how beautiful it is – and above all, how well it suits me and my skin tone. Yes, someone has already thought something. I bet you’d be surprised how much you like your natural color if you give it a chance.

The hairstyle phenomenon

Years of bleaching have extremely damaged my hair. Straw tips weren’t even the worst part of it. Hairstyles, such as curls, almost never lasted for me. They hung out all the time and barely survived the walk from the front door to the train station. No wonder, the hair is no longer resilient and brittle. Since I’ve been wearing my natural hair color, curls last three days. Combing doesn’t matter either. The best proof of how much well-groomed and healthy hair can sometimes withstand. In addition: They are also much easier to style and shine a lot nicer.

Short process

My hair just didn’t get any longer – no matter what I did. I knew, of course, that bleaching wasn’t necessarily beneficial. I still wanted to try to cut my hair as little as possible to make it look as long as possible. A big mistake. I changed my hairdresser and she mercilessly confronted me with the truth: The hair has to come off, otherwise it will break again and again. And with ab she meant chin down. So if you want your natural hair color back, you have to make short work of it. Because bleaching in the tips dries out the hair – and that does NOT look nice. You can still care for as much as you want. Oh yes, my hair is longer today than ever before. The best proof that it works …

My tip to let the hair color grow out: Keep up. The first six months are the worst as it looks like you’ve forgotten to recolor the approach. After that it actually looks like an ombré look and somehow not that bad anymore. Of course, you can also have the transition softened by the hairdresser. I promise you it’s worth it!
